Save a restaurant from Google Maps

"Want to go" started as a good idea and is now ninety pins across four cities, sorted by nothing. The list does not know which ones you already went to, or what you thought.

Confirming which place it is

Paste the link and you get an item straight away. On the place itself we then ask a short question — "did you mean this one?" — and confirming attaches the canonical place, with its address, city and coordinates.

That is what puts it on the map view and makes the city filter work. Get it wrong and you can detach it and pick again; anything you typed yourself stays.

What a Maps list cannot do

It cannot tell you what you ate, or that the place was better than you expected, or that you have been three times. One tap marks a place visited, and you can add what you ordered and a score if you feel like it.

Go again and that is a second visit, not an overwrite. Over time those add up into something a pin never was: a record of where you actually eat.

Finding it back later

Searching covers everything on an item: the title, the ingredients, the steps, the cuisine, the city, your notes and your own tags. So you can look for what you remember, which is rarely the title.

On top of that: filter by recipe or place, by want-to-try or done, by cuisine, by city, by collection or by tag. Those filters are built from your own library, so they only ever show what you actually have.

And when you have made it

One tap marks a recipe cooked or a place visited. A score and a note are optional, and a repeat is a new entry rather than an overwrite — the second time you make something is information too.

Out of that, and nothing else, a taste profile builds up: your cuisines, your cities, your recurring occasions. Counted from what you did, not guessed at.

Questions

Can I import a whole Maps list?: Not at the moment — places go in one at a time. In practice that is a feature: the ones you bother to add are the ones you meant.
Do the Google photos come along?: No, deliberately: their terms do not allow us to store those images. Your own photos of a place are a different matter and are welcome.
Is my list of places private?: Yes. The library is private by default, and a place only becomes visible to anyone else if you deliberately share that one item or put it on a public profile.

A save never fails: the link, the title and the image are guaranteed, and everything on top of that is a bonus you can correct.
